Holiday Greetings GIVEAWAY!

[ETA: Friday Confessional: I'm pretending today is the yesterday that this giveaway was supposed to go up. :) ]

No one get mad at me for saying this – just statin’ the facts ma’am. Snow is going to be falling soon here in Minnesota. Yes, that chilly, powdery, inconvenience that requires shoveling at 4am to get out of the driveway will be here before we know it. There are two upsides to this:

1 // My winter-lovin friends can finally stop their grumbling rejoice and bust out the skis, snow shoes, etc.

2 // Snow signals the start of the “holiday” season, which leads to three things: family time, pumpkin pie, and fires in the fireplace. Can you really go wrong with any of that?

Another thing that comes with the holidays is the yearly Christmas card… which has become not-exactly-yearly in our household. When your neat little family of four is split between three different major cities, that sometimes happens. We cover Minneapolis, Washington DC, and Philly. Break it down to the in-law level and extended family and we take over Singapore, Chicago, and New York. (Not to mention, we’ve got the state of Minnesota pretty well covered.) ;)  But split as we may be, we’re about as solid of a family I could ask for.

This year I’ve decided I think I’m finally “grown up” enough to send out my own Christmas card… with a little help from my friends at Shutterfly. Not going to lie… kind of excited about the one I created. I’ve “made” our family xmas cards in the past (see exhibit A [2008] below) attemtping to use my old Adobe CS3 skills (or lack there of). Let’s just say that this year’s card is kicked up a couple notches…!

The folks at Shutterfly thought you ALSO might want in on this early holiday cheer… so don’t quit reading just yet.

I wont show you which holiday card I decided to go with… don’t want to ruin the surprise. ;) But for the purpose of YOUR [potential] creation, you should know that you’re not just limited to Christmas cards!! Shutterfly offers all sorts of cards and invites, from new baby announcements to greeting cards and cards for all sorts of holidays! They also do photo books… one which I made after the 2009 Ragnar Relay. It was a really fun way to commemorate the experience!

So, you would maybe like to create some free cards, huh…? And you’re wondering what you need to do? I won’t make it too hard on ya. ;)

1 // Check out the Shutterfly website and leave a comment telling me what you’d like to make.

2 // Tweet this, and leave a comment telling me you did it:

Trying to spread a little holiday cheer! Giveaway @SperlyTriRunner http://www.drtrirunner.com

3 // Tell me your favorite holiday memory. :) Awww just talking about it makes me want one of my grandma’s burbon brownies and a fireplace.

Leave a comment for each one. Simple as pie! Oh, and did I mention there will be THREE winners!??! Ohh yes! 7 days until the giveaway closes (Fri. November 4th, midnight)… 27 days until Thanksgiving… 52 days until Hanukkah… 57 days until Christmas. Unlimited celebrations in between. Get on it!

Three Thoughts Thursday // 10.26.11

Ahhhhh… the little bear has awaken. :)

First of all, THANK YOU for all of the comments, texts, facebook messages, and emails that were sent regarding the last post. It’s either a really simple subject to talk about (with doctors, God, and um.. that’s it) or a kind of difficult subject to talk about (anybody not included in in category #1). The other day I realized… one of the things that puts it in that “difficult to talk about” category is that other than my doctors, no one really knows much about fibrous dysplasia. My doctors are great, but I can’t call them at 3am when I’m freaking out because I rolled onto my left side and woke up from pain. I can’t call them when I’m stressed about the amount of time this is taking to decide on a surgical procedure. And I definitely can’t call them and cry about missing practice or racing or my team. (p.s. If you want to know a little about it, I sent this article to my dad, mom, and sister. It’s an inanutshell kind of article about fibrous dysplasia. Short and simple.)

But please believe me dear friends and family, the support you are giving me is something that I appreciate beyond words.

Updates and such to be continued…

Secondly No – I didn’t accidentally OD on pamidronte. I know it’s Wednesday. But we’re going to pretend this is a Three Thoughts Thursday, because that’s really all I got for you right now. (Plus, tomorrow has other plans. ;) )

1 // Giveaway tomorrow!!

2 // Pinterest. Nuff said. You can follow my pins (is that even how that works…?) or just check em out. I know Mrs. Lindsey Cotter found me somehow. The other three followers? One is a TC blogger, one is the saviour who sent me a new iPod, and one is myself. Total of 4. Balllller.

3 // Please answer poll below. Topic of upcoming post…

What do you think of Kinesio Tape?

Again –  I don’t know how to put into words the appreciation I have for all the support you guys have given. I kind of feel like this…

 Bear hug. ^_^

I don’t know where this little animal love came from. Sorry little critters… not going back to being a vegetarian!

Take care, make sure to come back tomorrow for the giveaway, and remember: Life is too short for bad coffee.

Excuses / Vital Sox Winner

It’s that time of year again…

That’s all I have time for now… CLASS in 10 min. Ugh.

Macca, TriStar111 Minnesota, and a Giveaway!

THREE THINGS!! All equally important. (OK… TWO may be slightly more important to you than the other one…) Don’t skim this!

1 // MACCA. Chris McCormack. Two-time Ironman World champ. Wheeties box. Yeah… that Macca. He’ll be racing in the U.S.’s first ever TriStar111, which is right here in good ol’ Minnesota. The showdown is this Saturday (August 27th) in Maple Grove at Weaver Lake Park, but Chris McCormack will also be over at Urban Tri on Thursday (Aug. 25th) night from 5:30 – 7:00 for a book signing!!! There will be a limited number (~100) of copies of his new book (“I’m Here to Win”), cold drinks, and chances to win sweet goodies like the Ironman edition Yurbudz. PLUS if you haven’t had the chance yet to check out Urban Tri, you’re killing two birds with one stone. AWESOME shop!! Be there, or be square. More details can be found on Urban Tri’s news page.

2 // I recently took on a little blogging project for the College of Education and Human Development and the Kinesiology department. I know I have some younger readers just entering college, and several have asked about Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Sports Medicine, the U of MN, etc. Please feel free to check out my U of MN and don’t ever hesitate to ask questions!! Last year I had a girl come with me for a day of practice, classes, and work (HI KRISTEN!) and she is now a ‘U student’ and planning her degree to eventually enter the Doctor of Physical Therapy program!! You can find my UMN blog HERE. :)

3 // And last but certainly not least, the GIVEAWAY!! Yeah… I know this is the one you were really looking for. A legitimate Tried It Tuesday review will be coming later, but I thought we’d get to the fun (or more fun) part first. :) Up for grabs is a pair of SWEET Vital Sox arm warmers. <— See awkward photo at left. I want to say the temperature was about 60° when we started that ride. My core temperature overheats easily, but the circulation to my extremities still sucks. Hence the sports bra / arm warmers combination. Or the sports bra / gloves combination that you could likely see me running in around mid October. ANYWAYS, point of story is that the arm warmers rocked. Did their job… never felt too hot, too cold, and more importantly never slipped down my arms. And I can’t forget – big thank you to GEAR Running Store for providing these for the giveaway!! They’re the greatest. :)

WAYS TO WIN THE VITAL SOX ARM WAMRERS:

Each of the following options below counts as “one” entry. You can do just one of the following, or you can do all of them to up your chances. Please leave a separate comment for each thing you do! Giveaway closes one week from today (Wednesday, Aug. 31st) at midnight central time.

  1. Medical Mondays are by far my favorite posts, but I put probably a little too much time into them which is why they don’t go up as often. What is a sports medicine/injury/physiology/etc. topic you’d like covered on a Medical Monday? Leave a comment.
  2. “Like” GEAR Running Store on facebook, or check out their store website and tell me something you learned. (For the record, I don’t actually recall ever saying my quoted tagline on the “People” page…) Leave a comment.
  3. Tweet it (make sure to include @SperlyTriRunner) . Share the link on facebook. Or link the giveaway on your blog. Easy access from the “Share This” links below! ;) Leave a comment.

My papabear is currently visiting from Philly, the SUN is shining, and we’re headed out for coffee. Over n’ out!

Sixteen days…

I just submitted a ten page research paper. In Spanish. Ay Dios mío…

But that does confirm that: yes, I am still here. Possibly buried under a stack of PubMed articles and lab reports, but here none the less. I have had pretty much zero guilt or shame in admitting that the blog has been at the very bottom of “the list” this semester… that is until my amiga Betsy over at Earning My M-Dot called me out in one of her posts for slacking. And then Susan, my long lost friend in NY emailed me saying she was coming to Minneapolis and where the truck was my blog?

Guilt is a powerful emotion. Guilt about skipping that long ride because you were SPENT from being at the office till way late the night before. Guilt about not being cleared to play in your stupid 1-credit tennis class, when your doctor is clearing you to run as much as you please. (You’re a LINEAR athlete!! Don’t risk it for something so small!) Guilt that the Twins just lost 10-5 and yes I did just snap on someone unintentionally. (Oh… guilt that this was written last week and never hit publish? Twins won their last two games BTW.) Guilt that yes, that is a Costco sized box of Starbursts in my drawer. (Cheap, long ride fuel?!) And then it crept in – guilt from blog neglect.

I’ve still been reading though – I know that Julia went on a sick training trip, Betsy is planning (are you serious??) a freaking amazing racing/spectating trip, Steve is an overunder pronator and yes damnit we will ride soon, my teammate Matt posted a SOLID  race at Oceanside 70.3. I haven’t been able to post, but I’m definitely still reading!

ANYWAYS. Long story short, this is my life right now:

[ETA: we're back to the current date - April 19th.) There are a total of 16 days until my last class of the semester, and then ONE WEEK of finals with my Ex Phys exam on the last possible day – Friday May 13th (we can’t all be lucky) – and then I’m donnnnnne!!

Or at least done for 9 days until my May term class starts. :) Don’t feel too sorry for me – it’s PE 1012: Beginning Running. And my LAST PE course ever of my Kinesiological education. ( <- That’s the outcome of my degree. “Kinesiological.” Really?) I will, however, accept condolences from July 4th through August 4th when I’m sitting through 4 hours a day / 4 days a week / for 4 weeks of intensive Physics. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little…

Training? It’s going. I had probably the slowest ride of my life yesterday, but I’ve also had lots of great rides so I’ll write that one off as “one of those days” and move on. I’ve also been swimming consistently – 95% of which is contributed to having someone to consistently swim with! Running…? Not quite ready to comment on that one just yet. The racing season will be here in a blink of an eye though, so I better own up and take whatever I’ve got!

If you guys can just hang with me for sixteen more days… I promise my life will be about 75% less packed and stressful, and we can hang out like we used to back in the old days. ;) In a shameless attempt to KEEP any readers that I may still have, I’m going to be posting a giveaway sometime this week, so make sure you check back! I have several to give away, and they rhyme with depression leaves. Only they have nothing to do with Prozac or botany. ;)

Reader Qs:

Can I get a quick collective rundown from the people who are still out there – how is training going? What races do you have coming up? (I know a lot of you have already started competing – how did the 1st of the year go?) Any big trips – racing or otherwise – to look forward to this summer?

Train hard, train smart, train often!

Medical Monday: Epinepherine + GIVEAWAY!

Today’s Medical Monday is brought to you by a special (non-published) edition of FML Friday, the profits made from the EpiPen® Auto-Injector, and viewers like you.

Epinephrine is a natural hormone produced in the adrenal medulla, along with it’s sister hormone, norepinephrine. Both of these hormones fall under the category of catecholamines. Catecholamines are synthesized starting with tyrosine, taken up by the chromaffin cells in the medulla, and then converted into epi & norepi. It looks like this:

Epinephrine (think “adrenaline”) brings about many of the same responses as stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, however with typically longer lasting effects. You may have felt these effects at various time throughout your life: when proposing to your soon to be wife, when hearing from your wife that you’ve successfully planted a belly bean, when you’re toeing the start line at that A race, when your crossing the finish line at said A race and thinking how the hell did I do that?!

Epinephrine is also a powerful drug used in the treatment of severe allergic reactions. The hormone causes vasoconstriction, bronchial dilation, an increase in blood pressure, and a reduction in tissue swelling. The most common allergies treated with epinephrine are insect stings, foods, and medications.

Tips for avoiding the self-inflicted stabbing of EpiPen® Auto-Injector or any unnecessary trips to the ER:

  1. Always. Always. Always. Have an EpiPen with you.
  2. If you are allergic to a food, know what it is in every possible shape and form, and everything that may contain that ingredient.
  3. I always say assume best intentions, but that doesn’t equate to assume intelligence. If you tell your waiter that you’re allergic to, oh… lets say sesame seeds for example. Don’t assume that although you stated you were allergic to sesame seeds and cannot have any sesame products, that they will understand sesame dressing is a sesame product. After all, a seed is a seed. Dressing… that’s like liqud, right?

The end.

Of Medical Monday that is. :) So that tells you a little bit about the story of my last week. The rest as filled with 250 notecards of spanish medical terminology, wasting too much time checking Bonktown for a deal that I missed anyways, healing a hip flexor, and hours upon hours of exercise physiology. Speaking of exercise physiology… I also spent probably too much time ranting about the Iowa football rhabdomyASS case plastering ESPN and saying poor football players were pushed too hard. Tell the whole story. Please.

But alas mis amigos (how do you say “alas” in spanish…. anyone?), I’m still here, and I’m still alive. But because I’ve been so neglectful lately, I definitely feel the guilt eating away, and feel the need to make it up to whoever else is still out there for sticking around. Hence the 2nd part of today’s title… GIVEAWAY time!

Thanks to the gracious folks over at CSN, you have the opportunity to get whatever the heck you want.* My only forewarning is that if you’ve never been on CSN’s site, I’d start planning. Now. It took me like 5 days to finally decide on that pull-up bar (review here) because their inventory is so. flipping. big!

*Please note that CSN will only be funding $35 worth whatever the heck you want. The rest you are responsible for. :)

WAYS TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY

As always, make sure you leave a separate comment for each entry. If you leave me a beautiful comment saying:

1. I want the 12lb medicine ball in purple.
2. I would like more posts with different swim workouts.
3. I found you through the RW forums.
4. I tweeted.
5. ESPN is blind. Those boys are on roids.

well, yes, I appreciate your effort and tanacity. But those 5 entries are all one comment and when I plug in these names into excel, it’s going to be one entry. Capish?

EASY PEASY 5 WAYS TO WIN!

  1. Go to CSN’s site, find something you’d want (Steve… still tryna work on those pull-ups? ;) ). Tell me what it is/why you want it!
  2. Tell me an idea/specific topic you’d like to see here on Dr.TriRunner. It can fall under any day in the schedule: (Medical Mondays, Tried It Tuesdays, Work Out Wednesdays, etc.) or just be whatever the heck you want. (This one doesn’t have a $35 limit. ;) )
  3. Tell me how you first found your way over to Dr.TriRunner, or if you’ve been here a real long time, how you got to RunRoamRecycle. If it was by searching “doctors notes for free” or one of my other ridiculous search terms. Um… you’re disqualified.
  4. Tweet about the giveaway! And this should be a no question entry (if you have a twitter account) because there is now a SHARE THIS and TWEET THIS link at the bottom of each post! Just make sure you include the tag @SperlyTriRunner.. the link is already in there!
  5. The Iowa football deal – what do you think based off what you’ve heard? What do you think based off your gut instinct? Really, any commentary on that. I’d love to hear it.

There you go! The contest will be open for ONE full week – until Monday Feb. 7th – and then I will draw the winner the following day. I’m back off to my new favorite study spot in my ‘hood… free coffee refils all day, free wi-fi, comfy seating (and plenty of it!), and decent food. :D

Happy Monday!

I said I don’t post on Sundays, but…

… Holy moley!!! I get all up on my soap box about standards… and then I disappear for a week. (I do have responses to that post… just hang with me!)

However, it was a big week: the week school started back after a very nice and relaxing month off. The week of a big medical appointment. The week I went insane, in more ways than one. (More on that later…) The week my roommie and I decided, yeah, we’re gonna need something more than a Click-Clack couch in our living room. (We’d like some of this modern dining room furniture… I really want a high-top table!) The week we also decided, just because there is only two of us doesn’t mean we only need two plates. The week of the arctic rush – no, not that drink at Dairy Queen that looks like windshield wiper fluid – I mean the -25° temperatures. The week I FINALLY FOUND MITTENS THAT KEEP MY HANDS WARM!! (Product review coming!!!) This is also the week where various giveaways have moved from “pending” to “scheduled” so please stay tuned. :)

Just sayin, it’s been a big week.

But TODAY is a big day, and I’m hoping, praying, and rain-dancing my butt off that a certain yellow and green team will BEAR DOWN by the end of the night. So in that case mis amigos, have a lovely SUNDAY and I’ll catch you tomorrow!
